Here you will find answers to the most important questions about your holiday on La Gomera. If anything is still unclear – just get in touch!
The route goes via Tenerife: a flight to Tenerife South, a good 20 minutes to the port of Los Cristianos, then 50 to 60 minutes by ferry to San Sebastián. From there it is about another hour to Valle Gran Rey. How long the day turns out to be is decided by the wait for the ferry – anything from zero to three hours is possible. Our page about getting here covers every step with times and costs.
If possible, do not book a return flight that leaves before 11 a.m. Rule of thumb: ferry from San Sebastián at 7:30 a.m. – arrival in Los Cristianos at around 8:40 a.m. – taxi to the airport about 20 minutes – arrival at around 9 a.m. Do not forget: returning the hire car takes extra time.
Not from Germany. La Gomera only has a small island airport near Playa de Santiago, served by the Spanish airline Binter from Tenerife North and Gran Canaria – if you choose this route, you have to change airports on Tenerife. The usual route is via Tenerife South and the ferry.
No, only until about 8 p.m. (as of 03/2026). If you arrive later or want to go out in the evening, plan for it – either with a hire car or by arranging the return trip in advance. In the valley itself distances are short, and a lot can be done on foot.
There are enough bath and kitchen towels, and they are changed during longer stays. Please bring your own beach towels – they cope with the black volcanic sand much better than our household linen.
No problem. There is a key safe at the apartment door, so you can get in at any time. You will receive the code shortly before arrival. We will then meet in peace the next day – nobody has to wait for us or rush for the ferry.
In our view – yes! For exploring the island a hire car makes absolute sense and is quite inexpensive here. Otherwise you have to plan your holiday and your hikes around the bus timetable and the stops.
Tip: pick up the car right at the airport on Tenerife. Check beforehand whether you are allowed to take it to La Gomera.
Yes, both apartments have free fibre-optic Wi-Fi with high bandwidth. That is enough for video calls, streaming and working remotely – Tosca Dos has two workspaces on the gallery for this. Especially for longer stays, this matters to many of our guests.
Around 2.3 kilometres to the main beach, about 30 minutes downhill on foot. The way back is uphill – many guests take it at a leisurely pace in the evening or drive. By hire car it is a few minutes. More on our page about the beaches.
About 600 metres uphill there is a small supermarket for everyday needs. The larger SPAR supermarkets are down in the valley in La Playa and Borbalan, along with bakeries, a fruit shop and two pharmacies. Most are open from 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Yes. The well-known waterfall hike starts right at the foot of the house – so you do not have to drive anywhere first. Longer routes through the valley and into the laurel forest can also be started from here. More on our page about hiking.
Gladly. In the apartment there is a guest folder with our favourites – from Canarian and Italian to Asian, the valley has plenty to offer. Before arrival you will also receive a link to our digital guest guide for your phone, so you have the tips with you when you are out and about.
We especially like the island in April, May and June – everything is in bloom and the valley is green. The main travel season is between October and Easter, when it gets uncomfortable at home: daytime temperatures are then usually 20 to 24 °C, pleasant for hiking without the summer heat. A month-by-month overview is on our page about a holiday on La Gomera.
In Valle Gran Rey daytime temperatures are between 20 and 29 °C all year round, the sea between 18 and 23 °C. The south-west side is particularly sunny and dry, while the green north sees clouds more often. Even in winter there are many T-shirt days. Some spells are warmer, and in January and February it can sometimes be cooler – compared with Germany it still stays warm.
The official language is Spanish. In Valle Gran Rey you can get by well in English, and in many restaurants in German too – German-speaking newcomers have been living in the valley for decades. A few words of Spanish still open doors and hearts, even if only at the bakery.
In supermarkets and larger restaurants you can pay by card almost everywhere. For taxis, small bars, the market or some mountain restaurants a little cash is handy. There are cash machines in La Playa and Vueltas – better take some with you before trips to remote villages.
